Professional Team

Stephen Plane, our Head Professional, and James Carter, our PGA Professional, are an extremely important part of the Team at Banstead Downs, providing a warm welcome to all golfers, excellent advice on equipment and a very high standard of coaching.

HEAD PROFESSIONAL

Stephen joined Banstead Downs Golf Club after 11 years serving as Head Assistant at Royal Wimbledon Golf Club. 

After learning his golf in the Academy at Eden Golf Club in Cumbria, Stephen won the Cumbria Under 21 Matchplay and represented the county at junior and 'B' team levels.

Since turning professional, he played on the competitive North Region circuit, before deciding to move south to gain club professional experience at some of Surrey's finest golf clubs. Learning from Lee Johnson at Burhill and David Jones at Royal Wimbledon. Stephen brings to Banstead Downs the service and expertise the members of one of the oldest clubs in Surrey truly deserve.

Stephen's aim, along with James Carter and Stephen Son, is to introduce as many people as possible to our great game, with the emphasis on junior golf and the academy.

P.G.A PROFESSIONAL

James had an excellent amateur career having been an England School boy and member of the Surrey 1st Team for four years. He turned Professional in 1998 and since then has built a solid reputation in the area for top quality coaching.

James enthusiasm for the game has never diminished and his standard of play and knowledge of the game is outstanding, he has won numerous pro-ams in the county over the past 16 years and is currently in his sixth year on the Surrey P.G.A Committee.

James uses his knowledge within the Pro Shop to offer exceptional advice when it comes to buying the correct equipment for your game.

Stephen Son
PGA TRAINEE

Stephen turned pro in 2020 and joined the team at Banstead Downs in 2023. Stephen’s father was a PGA teaching professional in South Korea and Stephen is continuing the family legacy, passing on his enthusiasm for learning to the next generation of aspiring golfers. As well as coaching at the club, Stephen is also playing as many events as he can on the PGA South Region circuit to maintain his own game.
